About Environment Maryland
Environment Maryland is your state environmental group, standing up for the places we love and the values we share. Funded by supporters like you, our professional staff research the issues, educate the public, make our case to government officials, and bring people together to take action that wins tangible results.
Who we are
Environment Maryland is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. We believe Maryland is full of special places worth protecting and preserving for future generations.
Whether it’s the jagged coastline of the Eastern Shore, or the rolling hills of western Maryland, the state's natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways. Yet the places we love and the environmental values so many of us share are too often threatened by powerful industries, short-sighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action. That’s the idea behind Environment Maryland. Together with thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

What we do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting Maryland's environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door-to-door — raising awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about Maryland's environment, our elected officials hear plenty from the oil companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard, through petitions, emails, letters, phone calls and more, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

RESULTS

- A new plan to clean the Bay: In 2010, at our urging, Gov. Martin O'Malley released a plan of action that puts stricter limits on these sources of pollution and takes other critical steps to clean the Bay.
- Reduce Global Warming pollution: Maryland will reduce its global warming emissions by a quarter over the next decade thanks to a new law that sets firm deadlines for transitioning to clean energy and smarter transportation. We led the charge in Annapolis to win these requirements.
- Clean up dirty power plants. With the passage of the Healthy Air Act, the nation's toughest law limiting pollution from power plants, we pushed the General Assembly to require Maryland's six dirtiest power plants to reduce toxic pollution.
